Braces are successful and reliable appliances, but when it comes to eating, they can be very inconvenient and bothersome. There are many different foods you should and shouldn’t eat while you have braces, and it can be a bit confusing at times, which is why we are here to help you. The following list contains the foods orthodontists strongly recommend avoiding while you proceed through your orthodontic treatment:

• Ice
• Nuts
• Caramel
• Gum
• Gooey chocolate bars
• Pretzels
• Corn chips
• Popcorn
• Chunky peanut butter
• Hard crackers
• Hard cookies
• Hard candy, like jolly ranchers and jaw breakers
• Chewy candy, like taffy and gummy bears

We also recommend cutting the following foods into small pieces before eating them:

• Apples
• Peaches
• Pears
• Raw vegetables
• Pizza
• Corn on the cob
• Meat
• Chewy bread, like French/Italian bread

If you are discouraged while looking at the previous lists, it’s not as bad as you think. There are also many foods you can eat while you have braces, including:

• Soup
• Yogurt
• Ice cream
• Cheese
• Hulless popcorn
• Mashed potatoes
• Bananas
• Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
• Soft pasta, like macaroni and cheese, ravioli, and spaghetti
• Soft cookies
• Soft crackers
• Melons
