Enjoying the holidays with braces

The holidays are almost here and it is time to enjoy all those delicious foods and treats. Unfortunately the holidays can be a tricky time for patients with braces, and temptations can be hard to keep at bay while family and friends are enjoying delicious holiday dishes. Not to worry – there are foods you can still indulge in during the holidays.

Regardless of the time of year, the most important thing to remember is to keep up with your oral hygiene. Especially with braces, good oral hygiene is essential when eating or drinking anything sugary or sweet.

Foods To Avoid With Braces

Here are some popular holiday treats that you should avoid while wearing braces:

  • Peanut brittle
    • Nuts
    • Gingerbread cookies
    • Candy canes
    • Taffy
    • Caramel apples
    • Popcorn
    • Brownies with nuts
    • Jelly beans
    • Pretzels
    • Pecan pie

Though many of these foods are delicious, if you have braces, they can easily bend a wire or break off one of your brackets. Basically if it is chewy, sticky or crunchy it is not a good idea.  Don’t worry though – there are other holiday foods you can still enjoy, as long as you keep up with your oral hygiene.

Foods To Enjoy With Braces

Food is such a major part of any holiday celebration, especially if you have a large family or lots of friends. The holidays are notorious for indulging in delicious foods. Yum Yum!  With so many restrictions while having braces, here are some of the foods you can  enjoy!

  • Mashed potatoes
    • Gravy
    • Turkey
    • Ham
    • Dinner rolls (soft)
    • Stuffing
    • Cranberry sauce.

As you can see, there are still plenty of foods that can be enjoyed!  You can also customize some recipes to take your braces into consideration. For example, if you usually include nuts in your stuffing, you can leave those out this time around. Fruits and vegetables are always delicious as long as you fully cook them or chop them into bite size pieces.

So don’t let having braces stop you from enjoying the amazing food that the holiday season has to offer! You may not be able to indulge in quite as much, but you can still enjoy a variety of  delicious foods. For those who will be spending time cooking, adjust those recipes so you can enjoy!
