You are about to get braces that will improve your dental health and give you a beautiful smile. However, you may wonder how to brush your teeth around your braces, or how to even get the floss through. Oral hygiene is more important than ever when wearing braces, but how do you go about it?
Brush After Meals
One of the downsides of braces is that they have more places to trap food that feeds bacteria and acids harmful to teeth. It is recommended to brush your teeth and braces after every meal, or at the very least rinse your mouth with water.
How To Brush
Many of the basics of brushing remain the same when wearing braces: 45 degree angle to gums, 2 minutes long, fluoride toothpaste, soft bristles on the brush, etc. Make sure to not only clean your teeth thoroughly, but your braces as well. Check your smile afterwards to make sure everything looks bright and clear.
Use Interdental Brushes
These small brushes can also be a good help in cleaning your braces since they can reach under the wire and between the braces.
How To Floss
Using a floss threader helps you pull the floss under the wire. Waxed floss is recommended because unwaxed is more likely to get caught and shredded in the braces. Flossing with braces does take longer, but it is still necessary in maintaining your dental health.
Rinsing your mouth before and after cleaning your teeth helps to dislodge the food debris that gets trapped in braces. Rinse using water or a mouthwash recommended by your dentist.
